What Makes Luxury Candles Better?

Whether you are simply unwinding after a long day, taking time for wellness self-care, or getting ready for a romantic night in, nothing sets the mood like lighting candles. All the best candles instantly elevate the ambiance and create, or recreate, a special moment.

But what makes a high-end candle so luxurious? The simple answer is that they use more expensive materials, including awe-inspiring fragrances. Here is a deeper dive into what makes these candles so special.

The Scent
Fragrance can make or break a candle. This is one of the biggest differentiators between quality candles and discount versions. Mass produced candles often smell artificial. Instead of your typical one dimensional “vanilla” or “berry” scents, excellent candles have complex fragrances with layered top, middle and base notes. Luxury candles strive to balance unexpected notes creating something wonderfully unique. Quality fragrance oils are what makes a candle (and perfumes) swoon-worthy.

Wicks
Most bargain candles, as well as many expensive ones, are made with cotton wicks. While they get the job done, they just don’t have the same visual and auditory appeal as a wooden wick softly crackling in the background.

Wax
There are many different kinds of wax used in candle making. Soy and paraffin are economical choices and thus popular with many candle manufactures. Most luxury brands gravitate to natural waxes or proprietary blends with beeswax, coconut, soy, or apricot. We use a clean-burning coconut wax blend, which is the most eco-friendly of all wax options. It also holds a higher volume of fragrance, allowing for a stronger scent throw.

Vessels
Luxury candles are typically in decorative vessels that enhance your home décor. Sometimes they are so beautiful that you want to repurpose it long after the candle is gone. We intentionally do not include brand labels on the exterior of our vessels so you can easily upcycle into other uses.

Production
Cheap candles are made by the thousands (++) on a production line using the cheapest materials the company’s buyer can negotiate. Their goal is to mass produce at the lowest cost with little regard for the quality of each candle. However, quality candles are hand-poured in small batches by an actual person. Every single candle goes through a quality control inspection before being sent to you and they personally stand behind their product.

Performance
There are many factors that contribute to a candle’s performance including the wax, wicks, fragrance oils and container size. However, when practicing proper candle care, a luxury candle will burn well and provide fragrance throughout the life of the candle.

Price
You will not find luxury candles sold at the same price point as candles found at your local retail giant. The cost of raw materials alone makes this impossible. Like anything else, you pay for quality. Because luxury candles use superior materials, they cost more to manufacture.

  • Quality fragrance oils are significantly more expensive.
  • Wooden wicks cost more than cotton wicks.
  • Luxury wax, like coconut blends, are more costly.
  • Elegant candle vessels are more expensive than plain jars or tins.
  • Time is money and small-batch, hand-poured candles take more time to produce.

There are definite differences between luxury and budget candles. However, a luxury candle doesn’t have to come with sticker shock. It is possible to find a high-quality candle that is still affordable enough to actually burn! AM LUXE Candles offers luxury candles in amazing fragrances and exquisite vessels that every candle lover should own. Plus, they make an excellent gift – for someone else or yourself!
